: I have a 99 540 now, but just a few years ago I had a '96 Camaro Z28, 6 speed with the LT1 engine. I talked myself into putting a Vortech s-trim supercharger on that car. Thoughts:
: The LT1 Chevy V8 has a 10.5:1 CR. This is *baaaad* for boost. The most you could go was 6 psi, and that also required retarding the ignition timing from stock levels. It doesn't add as much power as you'd think. You could put timing back in with 100 octane race fuel if you wanted. More boost was out of the question due to the stock bottom end's cast (not forged) pistons unless you were looking for an excuse to rebuild the engine anyway.
: Since the Bimmer 4.4 V8 engine has a 10:1 CR itself, it won't be much different. I also doubt the Bimmer V8 uses forged pistons, because they're heavier and noisier due to "piston slap". I can guarantee that rebuilding/replacing a BMW V8 is at least twice as expensive as rebuilding the venerable small block Chevy V8 if something were ever to go wrong.
: Bottom line is I'd save the money and bolt on a 75hp-shot nitrous system. The Vortech kit for my Camaro was only $2500. $10K+ for the same thing on a 540i is a ripoff. Get on a list for a M5 instead. IMHO :)
