1997 specs:
Prem. PKG:
Montana Leather
Vavona Wood
cross spoke alloys (16x7" one piece)
metallic paint
side impact airbag system

Prem hifi system w/ DSP
Heated front seats
Heated steering wheel
4 speed auto tranny
split fold down seat rear
14 way power seat frt
Scheduled & full maintenance

The '97 528i was not available w/ Sport PKG. '98 is the first year Sport PKG was offered, which includes the Leather, 17x8 bolted wheels, 235 Z tires, lowered suspension, electric front seats, metallic paint, black out trim.

I've been told on this board that the '97 2.8L was equipped w/ VaNoS. Yet, nowhere in the '97 brochure does it state VaNos. But it did show 0-60 time to be 0.8 secs slower than the '98 model.
Others here can confirm or refute this issue. However, the '99 and '00 models w/ Double VaNos is no quicker than the '98 model. But recognize that the area under the curve is greater which means more usable power in the lower rev ranges for daily driving. The '98 improves further on safety with door anchoring devices, head protection airbags, seat belt tensioners, and emergency positive battery cable released via pyrotechnic.

You should seriously look into the '98. This is clearly the best bang in the used E39 market. And you don't take such a heavy hit on all of those engineering & manufacturing changes going amuck in the first few years of production.
