This really depends on how you use your brakes - or whether you know how to use & maintain them effectively.

On my last 5 series (82 528) I went through 3 sets of rotors in it's life (290,000 kms).

My current 97 E39 has only 62,000 kms on it - but the rotors and pads are still very good.

I do about half highway and half city driving.

Plan ahead so you don't use your brakes more than necessary. Exercise them occasionally with some hard fast stops.

Make sure you always torque the wheel nuts to the correct amount (about 75 lb/ft)

Inspect the rotors and pads frequently - look for any sign of scoring (stone caught under a pad)

Never put your car away with wet brakes - after washing drive it around a couple of blocks and get the brakes hot for drying - less corrosion of the rotor edges.

If you abuse you brakes you might get as little as 25-30,000 kms (20,000 miles)

Others will probably have even better tips for brake use and maintenance.
