: Gregg:
: While you are correct that 215 55 16 would be the correct size replacement, BMW recommends (and includes) the 225 55 16 on the non-sport version. I doubt that they change the speedometer calibration for the different size tires (and thus maybe that is why we have the OBC variance with speed?).

: The 225 55 16s do work perfect on a sport 5-series. FYI - Tire Rack originally thought that 16" wheels would not fit on a 540 sport due to the brakes (I think they have since corrected this - I HOPE!). But alas the brakes are the same on the sport and non-sport and thus 16" wheels work fine.

: Last but not least, you are correct that some better tires for winter are available in the 17" size.

You are right. The 215 comment ws strictly a matter of indicating that it would "theoretically" be the correct "minus one" size for the Sport, and that folks should not confuse the (oem non sport) 225 as being the same O.D. as the sport tire when it is not. Normally, same o.d. would be optimal; this is one case where it would not be advisable. (if going "down" to 16" for winter use on the sport). You are also correct, same brakes. In any event 215 was not a recommendation. 225 is correct/optimal snow fitment. Thanks for clarification regardless.
