My service experience (Russell BMW of Baltimore, Maryland) was EXCELLENT, however, that did the car no good at all. I received a refund for my vehicle over a month and a half ago, and purchased an E39 528i. My 528i is loaded with all the goodies, and the E46 has absolutely no competition on it IMO (overall). At first, I was reluctant to purchase a 5-series, because I love the shape of the E46 (and my Topaz Blue color), but now, I don't think I'll ever own a 3-series again!

: A little history for those of you who do not remember.
: '00 540i6 who I call "Faust"
: 12/14/99 ordered my 3rd BMW from Hendrick in Chlt.
: 3/15/99 car delivered.
: Upon my delivery inspection before signing the papers I notice a small cut (.5" through leather into the seat filling) in the passenger side seat bolster of my leather sport seats. Salesman and Sales Mgr note and are extremely apologetic and admited it probably happened at the dealer versus the BMW VPC in Greer. They committed to ordering the part and would call me to get it replaced.
: Months went by and they called me for installation this past Wednesday. No big deal, car is fine, just wanted to get the seat fixed sometime at no cost.
: Dropped of car with dealer and they gave me a yellowish '00 328Ci/Sport/xenon/HK/Step (12K miles on the ODO)as a loaner car.
: I was quite looking forward to driving this loaner car during a normal day since I was considering an E46 coupe or sedan before ordering my E39 - my wife and I anguished over this decision for 2 months. Bottom line? I was VERY disappointed with the E46 Coupe. It was loose as a goose and there were tons of rattles! The windows, armrests (front and rear) and dash all rattled when driving over the same roads that are wisper quiet in my E39. Almost felt like I was in a Honda with 80K miles. I also thought the Step was a joke could not see the advantage over a normal automatic box. After hitting the lever the box would not shift for approx 1 sec. Why bother? Hopefully this car was an early production or has been through a very tough 12K miles because I hate to think that the E46s are that terrible. I drove an E30 and E36 a total of 200K miles with very little rattles - very tough cars.
: In the end I guess I have been spoiled with the uncanny quiet/rigid cabin of the E39. It is litterally leaps and bound above anything else I have driven including a '00 Mercedes S500.
: In the late afternoon I gladly returned the loaner and awaiting me was my trusty Faust clean and ready to run. The service dept had repaired my seat to Dingolfing fresh condition and I could not tell it had been replaced. With all the "bad" service experience I read on this board I like to post good stuff when it is true.
