Valvoline makes the 5w-40 synth. YOu can get it at Kragens in the bay area.
BMW now uses 5w-30 synthetic that is made by castrol. I noticed this when my 528i had its 1st oil change last month.
Some dealers charge only 3.50/qt so you should check around
