I suspect that the reason the European child seats are not offered in Canada has to do with Canadian safety and approval specifications.

I am familiar with the child seats offered by Volkswagon in Europe - very well designed, they sell them by the tens of thousands there. My VW dealer in Canada tells me that the Canadian government specs for child seats require a different (not necessarily better) method of mounting the child seat, therefore, VW does not import these seats to Canada.

I think the situation with BMW is similar. In Europe you can get a rear passenger seat that has integrated child seats for the 2 to 9 year old crowd - but again, this is not offered in Canada.
