I am chastened to also admit flings with Audi ('84 200; '90 V8), an ongoing affair with Porsche, and a brief but hot obsession with a certain Ms. Ducati.
My first love was a '55 Chevy hot rod (which could pass everything on the road except a gas station). When my acne and drivers license prohibition cleared (CHP testimony: "...exhibition of speed..."), it was on to my lovely though unfaithful TR 6, followed by a racy little Italian doll by the name of Alfa Spider.
Next was a long, metaphysical sojurn with a somewhat slow but thoughtful VW Westfalia blonde named Athabasca - christened after the Canadian glacier transversed together in a classic 70's backpacking sojurn around the North American continent.
Back to San Diego, and a reasonable living repairing sportscars, as well as sideline of buying/fixing/reselling 'em. Yes, I have carnal knowledge of many little MGB tarts, though I'm not proud of it.
Finally, having had enough of the fickle subtleties of the SU (..not deemed "constant depression" for nothing), it was on to San Luis Obispo and engineering school. Managing a foreign repair shop in town while attending school (builds character!), a little German waif from Visalia happened my way...
Beset with serious internal maladies, she could travel no further up 101 with her family. And so began the love affair which binds my spirit today. Slow in recovery, due to limited rehabilitation funds, she was soon a star of the SCCA social circuit, as well as a daily travel companion and willing BMWCCA technical consultant.
Hope you win your bet - and thanks for asking!
: Just for grins sake, I have a bet with a friend that the average will be three BMW for those who responde.
: I have owned and driven into the ground three with the forth keeping my adrenalin running. My first was a 81 320, then a 84 533, 92 525, 00 540 DINAN modified. I am looking forward to the next version of the 5 or possibly the comeback of the 6.
