I got the BMW roof rack with the mountain bike attachment for my 540. I would highly recommend it. It screws into the four mounting points built into the roof of your car so it will not scratch the paint (if you are careful installing it!). Then the bike rack screws into the roof rack. Once installed, it is SOLID - much sturdier than the Yakima rack I had on my old car. Some have complained of wind noise, but I didn't find it to be that bad.
