An aftermarket stereo upgrade does not necessarily kill the steering wheel controls or the in dash functionality. I had my 2000 528 standard stereo upgraded with two amplifiers, equalizer, cd changer, subwoofer, and two pairs of MB Quart speakers. Total cost for installation: $600. Total cost for equipment: $2050.
