In case it matters: my car is an early production 2000 528iA with DSP and no NAV.

Could only find references to the more sophisticated 540 computer in the archives. This is what I discovered with my 528. More info would be much appreciated.

With the key in the accessory on position (no need to have car running), press and hold the trip reset button on the dash. After a few seconds the odometer/trip meter display will change to:

teSt __1._

VERY QUICKLY release the button.

I believe the __1._ represents what I'll call test menu (or panel) 1.

What happens next depends on whether you quickly press the button again or do nothing.

If you quickly press the button again, the __1._ will change to __2._, and if you repeatedly press again and again quickly it will step up to (in my case) _21._, and then repeat.

OK, if while at __1._ you DO NOT press the button again quickly (ie. do nothing) the display will change in a second or so to (in my case):

_08189 __1.0

I call this menu 1 item 0, and I have no idea what _08189 means.

If you then press the button repeatedly you will step through menu 1 items 0 to 7, in my case as follows:

__4812 __1.1
838119 5_1.2
063309 __1.3
__2999 __1.4
07_150 0_1.5
095_06 3_1.6
03_28_ __1.7

Press again and again, and the series repeats.

Press and hold and the display reverts to:

teSt __1._

Quickly press once momentarily and the display will change to:

teSt __2._

Do nothing at this point and the display will change to:

teSt __2.0

ie: menu 2 item 0 (the only item available, I think)

Here's the fun part: now press the button momentarily and all the dash displays light up and cycle and the gauges sweep from one end of their scales to the other twice. Press the button again momentarily to repeat this.

When the gauges have stopped moving, press and hold the button to exit back to: teSt __2._ Press and hold again and it will drop you out of test mode and restore your trip meter to it's previous reading.

I don't think menus 3 through 21 do or say anything - I only checked 3 through 6 and 21, but as soon as you let them drop into item 0 you immediately exit the test mode and end up back at your odometer/trip meter display.

If anyone knows more about this, either what the numbers displayed in menu 1 mean, or if there are other things I haven't hit upon, please post!

Also, if your menu 1 items differ from mine, post what yours says and what year/accessories or whatever your car has.

some things should not be messed with unless
you know what you are doing,
