Dear WMB,

I just purchased a Black/Black CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) '98 528i with Sport Premium Package, 5 spd, and EVERY avail. option and 25k miles for $34k but I originally was looking for a '97 528iA. During my search I found there to be about a 10% per year difference in price. Meaning that a comparable '98 was 10% more than it's '97 equivalent. With a model change the delta would be closer to 15% or so but I don't think the '01 is a radical redesign just a refinement to the '96.5 - '00 body. Your price of $26k is pretty good given the 64k mileage. My only concern is that your car cannot be sold by the dealer as a CPO car since the CPO requirement is < 60k. The CPO certification means you are getting a car that has had ALL normal service performed and meets many quality guidelines. The best part is that BMW extends the original 4yr/50k bumper to bumper warranty to 6yrs/100k from the original vehicle in-service date (original customer delivery date). The warranty extension is not quite as all-encompassing as the 4/50k but it is very close. I also found that most BMW dealer certified CPO '97 528iA cars (with 30-40k miles) were going for $32k - $36k with best deal being about $32-33k. I also searched non-BMW dealer lots and found the exact same car was listing at $29k - $32k with best deal being about $28-30k. In other words the BMW CPO warranty extension was costing about $3-4k. It's up to you to decide if it is worth the extra cost. I'm a peace of mind guy so it was. Given the amount of road trips I take the Emergency Roadside Assistance with Vacation Interruption Protection (BMW delivers an equal bimmer to you wherever you are so you can continue your trip) and the known electrical bugs with the 528 made it a no-brainer for me. I had a '95 325i where this coverage saved me on a trip so I'm partial to it.......good luck with your decision and purchase........BMW (Best Motor on Wheels)
