Bill,

Congratulations on your '98. I too just bought a '98 528i. Opinions definitely do vary on bimmer tire rotation. My first BMW was a '95 325i and since I was always a guy who bought the lifetime tire rotation and wheel balancing package from my local Goodyear garage for my American cars and rotated the tires every 5k I had an intellectual short-circuit when the dealer REFUSED to rotate my tires on my 325. Here's the scoop I was given and I must admit, at this point I agree with it. BMW's have independent suspension and as such each tire physically sets in its' own "groove" based upon the different weight distribution at each corner of the vehicle. On thing that is indisputable is that you should NEVER rotate tires between sides. You are virutally guaranteed to prematurely wear the tires. The debate is over front to back rotation. I have decided that it's best to leave them in place and keep the car in alignment and then replace the tires in pairs (front/back)as they wear out. Keep in mind a major reason American cars need tires rotated so often is because ALL of the wear ocurrs up front from cornering and front-wheel drive power. A properly maintained BMW should wear all 4 fairly evenly since the fronts will wear from cornering and the rears from rear-wheel drive power. This is probably version 20 from the "peanut gallery" but it has worked for me.
