I might be totally out to lunch here, but I heard (read?) that the reason for the hidden exhaust was to reduce exhaust noise as required by some German noise law. I think I recall something about it being measured by driving the vehicle past a stationary measuring device at a certain speed. This might explain why Mercedes has gone "stealth" with their exhausts too.

Where this all falls apart, of course, is how the M5 and other similar cars get by this requirement. Maybe it has something to do with a corporate average like CAFE rules in the US. But then again, I might be full of it.
