I see no evidence that Mercedes is more reliable than BMW anymore.. I used to think that way, and this was probably true 10-years ago.. I had a friend who had a 300E a number of years ago.. The engine block cracked at 30k miles and needed a new engine.. Car was out of commision for several weeks.. Luckily as you say, the service was good though..

I was shocked to read Consumer Reports recently on BMW and Mercedes.. Most of the BMW's got a good or very good.. There were a couple Mercedes's that were rated poor or below average.. They included the M-Class, and SLK-Class.. In fact the E-Class received a fair rating..

John,

I wish you the best of luck.... sorry to hear about your 540... BMW's are decent cars.... But i would never buy one.... I owned a 540 automatic also and had too many problems.. not to mention horrible salesman and service... I went to the Mercedes dealer down the road and i was treated like a king... I have an E430 now and it has 40K miles on it... Never once had a problem... and the luxury and class is way beyond that of any BMW... Again, i wish you the best with your car....
