Family is out of town, so I am playing bachelor and lo and behold, after cleaning up my daily mess, I have TIME available !! So I filled the tank over at COSTCO by SJ airport, tooled on down 17 and got off at 280 to pick up a prescription Valley Health Center that I have to mail to the family back East on vacation, and then get back on 17 over the hill to Santa Cruz and on towards Watsonville to Corralitos. Corralitos, if you are not familiar - is a wide spot at a cross roads back off of Freedom Blvd. It's claim to fame is a tiny store that has a SMOKEHOUSE at the back. These folks use apple orchard wood to smoke their meats and they make the absolutely BEST bacon! Very lean, thick sliced, and real smoked cure, not water injected "smoke flavor" . I don't eat much bacon so when I do, I want it to be good stuff. Got my bacon and then tooled back down Freedom Blvd. through down town Watsonville to pick up 129 East to 101, then North on 101 past the Gilroy Garlic festival (fortunately got through Gilroy before noon when the festival opens for the day) and on home to Santa Clara.
117 miles, and 33.6 mpg on the OBC and a smooth sweet ride on 17, 129 twisites, and up 101. The route had a good mix of mountain up and down hills, curves, twisties, freeway etc. Just a joy to drive under all conditions, smooth, quiet, 55-80 in a flash with the easy press on the gas pedal to pass - always a sense of being solidly planted at any speed , straight or curvey - - - just an absolute JOY to drive! Worth the 30 year wait !
