Here are three photos of changes to the 2001 E39 front and rear lights. Note the addition of front Park Distance Control.

Not sure if the cars shipped to North America will have these changes or not - hope so.

doubt the US spec'd 5 series will have the rear light arrangement shown on the pics noted...it's a German layout w/orange bulbs vs US orange lens...might get the park distance control but I doubt that too...front lights are wicked with parking light rings-not sure I like that...
