I find that city mileage SUCKS unless you barely give it any gas - 12mpg is quite realistic if you like to zip through the gears. Highway mileage, on the other hand, is 20+ regardless of speed (I just did a SF to Portland 1300 mile roundtrip with an *average* speed of [snip] (to protect myself legally) and did a 1500 mile route in Europe when I bought the car, so I've explored the upper portion of the dial).

I have a 1998 540iA (premium/sport package), and have been getting LOUSY mileage since I got the car (appx 12 MPG around town). I know that this car has a big V8 in it, but the EPA rating was 18/24, and I've never gotten near this. I've brought the car to 3 dealers, and they all tell me that there's nothing wrong (wish they set the expectations correctly *before* I bought it).
Anyway, can anyone comment on gas mileage you're getting on your 540? Is my experience common, or is there something wrong with the car?
