Make sure you check your mileage by calculating it from full fill-up to full fill-up. The OBC indicated mileage can't be trusted - but usually it is optimistic not pessimistic. There is a "correction factor" for that mileage figure and this might have been screwed up on your car (if that is what you are using to get your numbers).

I have a 1998 540iA (premium/sport package), and have been getting LOUSY mileage since I got the car (appx 12 MPG around town). I know that this car has a big V8 in it, but the EPA rating was 18/24, and I've never gotten near this. I've brought the car to 3 dealers, and they all tell me that there's nothing wrong (wish they set the expectations correctly *before* I bought it).

Anyway, can anyone comment on gas mileage you're getting on your 540? Is my experience common, or is there something wrong with the car?

Thanks in advance (Please reply via email).
