I guess you could call me feather-footed. I avg. about 23 mpg with my 6 speed. I do a fair amount of highway driving. However, in the city, with all the torque that the 4.4 puts out - I can feather the throttle, keep it under 3,000 rpm, and still outpace most traffic.

I only give it the gas at a light if I have a "worthy" opponent. (smile)


I have a 1998 540iA (premium/sport package), and have been getting LOUSY mileage since I got the car (appx 12 MPG around town). I know that this car has a big V8 in it, but the EPA rating was 18/24, and I've never gotten near this. I've brought the car to 3 dealers, and they all tell me that there's nothing wrong (wish they set the expectations correctly *before* I bought it).

Anyway, can anyone comment on gas mileage you're getting on your 540? Is my experience common, or is there something wrong with the car?
