My '99 540i/6sp has averaged 23.5 since new (27k miles) according to the onboard computer. There is a lot of highway driving in that number. Slower suburban driving yields 19-20 mpg.



I have a 1998 540iA (premium/sport package), and have been getting LOUSY mileage since I got the car (appx 12 MPG around town). I know that this car has a big V8 in it, but the EPA rating was 18/24, and I've never gotten near this. I've brought the car to 3 dealers, and they all tell me that there's nothing wrong (wish they set the expectations correctly *before* I bought it).

Anyway, can anyone comment on gas mileage you're getting on your 540? Is my experience common, or is there something wrong with the car?
