You are correct.. for most non BMW systems. However, in a BMW, an amp is not just an amp. Its also (at least) also crossover in the standard system, and in the DSP system its an A to D converter, at least 6 D to A converters, and two pretty sophisticaed DSP chips which bring it a lot closer to the first description than the second.

Does it take a general message from the head unit and distribute it with amplification to the individual speakers? Or does the radio send out separate outputs for each speaker and the amplifier only enhances each. TIA
