Had the same thing happen to my '97 (with 41k mi.) and the dealer was able to remove the coin and reinstall the holder. HOWEVER, shortly thereafter the whole thing fell out (which is apparently terminal) and they replaced the whole unit. ALthough it was 100% covered under warranty (the question never came up [Westchester BMW in New York])the work sheet stated "coin holder repair... ...door panel R&R"! Och!
