You pay gas guzzler tax on the 540i because of the steptronic tranny. The steptronic on the 540 gives you the 3.15 diff and gas mileage goes down to 15/21 mpg, hence the gas guzzler tax. So you're still subject to the $1300 gas guzzler tax even if you could get the steptronic without the sport package on the 540.

Awong, I have a question for you about your 1999 BMW 540i Sport. Did you get rid of those butt ugly style 32 (radial) alloy wheels yet. If you did great. I hope they are really nice. If you didn't I hope you do soon. You don't actually like the style 32 alloy wheels, do you? They degrade the look and erode the high performance apperance of the 540i Sport I think. To each their own I guess.
Does anyone know whether or not you can order a 2001 540iA with the steptronic trans without ordering the sports pkg? All I want is the steptronic without the $4,000 cost of the sports pkg and the ensuing gas guzzler tax. Steptronic is a $1200 option on the 530 but doesn't appear to be an option (outside the sports pkg) on the 540. Thanks for the info.
