I've taken delivery of both my '97 and '00 540/6's in Munich and shortened the break-in period on both cars to exactly 8km - the distance from Niederlassung to the A-8 on-ramp. From that point it was balls to the wall (150+) until I reached Koln. The '97 had 50,000 miles on it when I sold it and my '00 has 23,000. Neither burned any oil between oil changes and both run as strong or stronger than other 540/6's I've run against. My question is, I will be picking up my '01 M5 in a few months in Munich and wil be driving there for a few weeks before returning to LaLa land. What is the pragmatic reason to follow BMW's recommendation for break-in on the more exotic M5? On my plane I am advised to run it has hard as possible at low altitude for 10 hours to ensure a good break-in (but the Lycoming is stone age compared to the BMW engine)
