Having a problem with the cruise control on
my '98 E39 528i 5 speed.

When I press the + to set the cruise, it does not
engage and hold the throttle at all. This does not always happen. Sometimes it works beautifully. When
the system is functioning it never cuts out or misbehaves. It seems to either work or not work from each time the engine is shut off and the key removed.

The dash indicator light always responds to the 1/0
button being pressed.

I've had it work for some very long drives so I know
how it functions.

Is there a connector, or fuse, or sensor that needs to be addressed?

Thanks for any help.

If your dash indicator lamp is on then it is not a fuse issue.

First thing I would check is the control switches on the clutch and brake pedals. As I recall there is a ground lead comes through both those switches in series - any interruption and the cruise cuts out.

Cheers
Jim Cash
