I don't own an Audi or a BMW, but I'd like to get one or the other. Specifically, I'm interested in a manual-transmission model with lots of power, like the S4, the 540i, or perhaps the 330i or 330ix. (The suped-up A6s are out of the question, because I think they look funny, even though most people love them, and the MB 430 4Matic won't cut it because it's an automatic.) Anyway, I'm wondering whether the rear-wheel-drive BMWs perform well on wet surfaces, or do they spin out? Is their power only useful and fun when it hasn't rained on the roads? Is all-wheel-drive a major benefit to harvesting power in corners when roads are slick? I don't want to burn up a set of tires every 10,000 miles on a RWD car because my rear end is always sliding out under hard acceleration from a stand-still or hard cornering. Is AWD necessary, or does AST/DSC harness the power in the RWD bimmers in less-than-ideal road conditions? Thanks.
