proper oil for New England 5-30 0r 5-40 synthetic? (archive)

My dealer changed oil on my 2000 528i, using 5-30 BMW synthetic oil. I know there is a 5-40 BMW synthetic oil too.
Are there any significant diffrences, MANUAL says either one.
sticker on car gives part no for 5-40 . any thoughts?I live in COnnecticut.
