The question was asked last week how to access the * and # on factory phones for voice mail recovery. I knew it could be done but have been away from my car for the past week. I checked it out - here is how it works on my 1998 528

If you are using the radio head unit press the "TEL" button and dial the number. After you connect the call you will notice the text above the last (6th) button changes from "CLR__MENU" to "*#__MENU". Press the left side of this button and the characters * and # appear above the first button. Press under the necessary character and the display will return to normal so you can input the numeric code.

If you are accessing a speed dial from the steering wheel, simply press the "TEL" button by the radio after you have connected the call and follow the above instructions.

It takes a while to figure out switching between screens but it works. Of course you could always use the keypad on the handset.

I hope this helps,

Roderick
