I seem to go through a car every 2-2.5 years, with "wandering eye" starting after the first year or so owning whatever my current vehicle is.

That said, I LOVE my 540i. Here's why:

In late '95 I bought a '96 Z28 Camaro, 6 speed. My first new car. This thing hauled ass, handled okay, and had t-tops that came off on those gorgeous sunny CA dayz. Problem was it was impractical, cramped, noisy/squeaky/rattly, and I kept getting pulled over by the cops in it.

In early '98 I replaced my Z28 with a used '96 Impala SS. Total opposite. Huge, smooth, quiet, reasonably quick (15.1 @ 92mph in the quarter, 0-60 in the high 6s). Invisible to ticket-happy cops. Handled like the barge that it was, but mostly I got bored of the automatic. Wanted a stick again.

So I just got my 540i... The 540 offers the acceleration my '96 Z28 had (with even better handling), a quiet, smooth ride like the Impala, and build quality far better than either. Although time will tell, I think that being a 4-door, it will be less attractive to cops and more stealthy to drive fast in than many 2-door cars. Especially in orient blue.

In short, I'm 27 and single and I LOVE the 540!
