I've had my 97 540ia for about two months now, since buying it on Ebay. Although it's been in the shop weekly for thousands of dollars in expensive repairs that just shouldn't be on a 50k mile car (I think it was abused in Canada), I really have nowhere else to go. There's nothing to compare to this machine; it's truly my dream car.

Ironically, when it's in the shop, I'm annoyed not because of the expense, but the hassle that I won't get to drive it! I'm reminded of how great a car the 540i is when I'm back behind the wheel of my 97 VW Jetta, my utterly reliable but underpowered daily driver.

I don't want a sports car, hate with a passion SUV's, and can't imagine anything in the 540i's class that compares. If I sell this car, it will likely be for a newer model, despite my occasional grumblings and web surfing at the Lexus site.

Some people treat cars like wine. They sample a variety of vintages, like to have different wines at different times, etc. Me, I'll take a good port with everything. That's me with cars.

But it's just a car after all....
