Re: 2001 - Yes, you can shut it off. There is an on/off switch. In 2001 they put the PDC in front and back bumpers of the 540. Very cool. The sensors are body color and almost un-noticable.

My first impression is that it is *very* accurate.

I haven't had the car long enough to tell you if it will pick up a something well below the bumper height.
