In order for the light to come on, the fault must have occured for 2 consecutive driving cycles, but if the fault does not occur again for 3 complete cycles, the light will go out. If you are curious what caused it, even if it goes out, the fault is stored in memory until 40 consecutive driving cycles have passed w/o a re-occurance, at which time it is erased. The check engine light deals strictly with the emisions system, so I would not be too terrible worried if you have to take it in because it does not go out. Just make sure you check the gas cap and don't get too upset if it does not go out after three drives, as they must be complete drives, where the specific functions must have had a chance to be checked.
