I am currently a 96 C4S owner(guardsred/black). Also had a 2001 Boxster S that recently sold. Been into Porsches for a while so here's my 2cents worth. 1. Have the car checked by an independent specialist Porsche repair shop regardless of whether its at a dealer or not. Don't buy one that the dealer refuses to let you use an independent or suggests you use one "he" knows. With the VIN you can call Porsche North America headquarters in Atlanta and get a list of service under warranty and the complete bio on the car-- ownership, major incidents, etc. Might be worth it. 2.Good model choice--96 or 97 Cab should hold value pretty well as the last of the aircooled models (993 series). They still feel like real sports cars, not GT cars. As example, in a few markets 1999/2000 996 coupe series are trading at prices below the 97 993 C2S coupes. Bay area premium probably exists but there are a lot of 993 C2 Coupes and Cabs floating around the country so don't buy it unless you think its fairly priced, premium or not. Shipping is no big deal, I've shipped cars across country in a few days and remember, all of them were shipped from Zuffenhausen originally. Probably more important, black/beige better color for value than burgandy which is not a "traditional" porsche color and I don't remember specifically if the 96 Cab has the 282hp varioram engine that was offered in the 96 C4S model(up from 270hp. I know all 97s had the larger hp output. I'd check. Also, does either have motor sound pkg or sport (030) suspension pkg or 18 inch wheels? Check, might be a nice little enhancer that makes the difference for you 3.Mileage differential is really meaningless except there is a 45K service interval that costs about $1k. One will come sooner. If the car's been serviced as required, has all records and is in "excellent" shape mechanically and physically (including plastic rear window), then undoubtdly there are plenty of miles left in it to enjoy the twisties and your basic 2nd/3rd gear acceleration (don't drop the clutch in 1st, they are expensive to repair and its not a ford) Enjoy. I know you will.
Hi. Really happy 528iA sport owner. Looking at buying C2 Cab. Since you guys seem to have all bases covered and were real helpful in my first decision to buy the '00 528i I thought I'd post this:
I'm looking at buying two used C2 cabs. A black/beige '97 with 41k miles in NJ, or a Burgundy (custom)/grey '96 with 37k miles in the Bay Area. Moving to Bay Area and can ship black cab to SFO if I need to at no cost (part of move). Price is almost the same for the two cars - difference is obviously Bay Area premium. Of all the cars I tested, these two drove the best - real tight. Which one do you think?
