My engine compartment is due for a good cleaning, so I picked up a can of engine degreaser at Pep Boys. However, I am having second thoughts on spraying this stuff on it. Is it safe or does is discolor any parts? Also, when rinsing off, is it safe to spray the hose around the engine compartment? Maybe I should play it safe and just use something like Simple Green? Should I cover anything with plastic bags, etc? Any advice would be appreciated.

Eric,

What I always do is go to Pep Boys, get a large bottle of CASTROL SUPER CLEAN, its the BEST STUFF IN THE WORLD!!! Now cruise to a local self serve car wash like in Tustin or something. Let the car sit for 15-20 min with the hood up to cool it down a little, now rinse the compartment and prewash using the engine decreaser they have built into the car wash. And rinse that stuff away too. Now spray SUPERCLEAN all over the place, let it sit for 5 min and spray it off with the wash cycle and then rinse.
I always cover electronics up, especially if they expose wires, or electronic distributors/transformers. Bring a bunch of rags with yea (10 pack at target white terricloth) and wipe everything down as much as possible. Start her up and drive...
Done this many times, one time I did it to my Camry and destroyed the distributor (got water in it) because I didn't cover it up :)
