Tight Steering in '97 540i (archive)

Has anyone had problems with tight steering in the 540? I recently drove a friend's 2000 M5 and my steering feels like an old pickup with no power steering compared to his.

I have taken the car in a couple of times in the past, but the dealer could never figure out what the problem was. Can anyone help me with this? I think it is getting worse.
