I'm wondering, becasue the "head unit" has all of the computer functions integrated with it. How can it be taken out without losing access to the computer?

I wouldn't mind being able to remove my head unit if I could get a decent looking head unit install AND be able to keep computer functions as well.

Keep us up to date on your project! Sounds pretty cool.
