I had good luck with Pirelli Winter 210 directionals in 225/50x16 on my Nissan 300ZX, so I went with Pirelli's latest snow tire, the Winter 210 SnowSport. I figure the Pirelli's to be a better compromise tire than the Blizzaks which have a reputation for poorer dry handling. Also, Blizzak's special tread compound is only there for the top 55% of the tread.

TireRacks price for 225/55x16 SnowSports is totally out to lunch, though. I bought them in Toronto for less in Canadian dollars than TireRack wants in US dollars. Dunno what's up with that.

I have a 528iA sport with 235/45x17 summer tires and I dropped slightly to 225/55x16 snows on used '98 540 non-sport wheels (20 spoke).

As I have posted before, the additional cost of the snow tires themselves is essentially zero - every mile you put on your snows is a mile you're not using up your summer tires. The cost of the wheels is whatever the depreciation is on them between when you buy them and when you sell them if you no longer need them - get a good deal on used rims and you might break even or make money.

Don't even consider mounting and dismounting tires on the same rims - you're just asking for rim and tire damage eventually, and the cost quickly adds up. Six years ago here in Toronto (last time I checked) tire places wanted $15 (CDN) per wheel to dismount/mount and balance - that's $120 per year, which will soon pay for extra rims. Also, one of the benefits of winter wheels is that your nice summer rims aren't exposed to winter salt/sand/grunge.

Checked the archive, nothing on point. Since it just started flurrying here in North Jersey, I guess it's time to get snows/rims for my 2000 540i6. Any ideas (other than leave it in the garage)...

I'm going with Pirelli Winter 210 Assym's on stock wheels (front size - 235/45x17 - for 540i/6). I'm interested in how the new Pirelli's perform.

Rgds,
Norm
