I am thinking of getting my wife an S60 when they come out. I'd consider a 325i but 1) I'm the bimmer guy and she would like an easier car to drive. I find Volvo's looser and more apporachable than BMWs. 2) I'm the bimmer guy and I'll be jealous of her having my brand. THoughts?

I owned a 2000 S80 T6 which I traded in after 5000 miles to buy a 2000 528i. The S80 was by far the worst car I've ever owned. Reliability problems, handling issues (e.g., torque steer, light steering) and bad Volvo customer service were some of the problems, and they seem to be recurring themes. If you check out Edmund's Townhall as well as Brickboard.com (the web equivalent of bimmer.org) you will see enough complaints and problems with the S80 (and the older S70) to make you think twice about buying a first or second production year S60 (which is built on an S80 platform).

In my opinion, Volvo's entry into the high-end market has been lackluster at best, and their cars are certainly no safer than any other equivalently priced cars out there. If you don't want the 325, I think you would be better off looking at an Audi A4 or MB C-class rather than the S60.
