R/T button on multi-function steering wheel (archive)

Does the R/T button suppose to toggle back and forth between the stereo and the phone? It doesn't seem to work in my '97 528i. When I hit the R/T button, the integrated BMW phone (-6000VRT) turns on, but the MID display doesn't switch to phone mode and I can't scroll through the phone memory registers either. Does anybody else have the same problem?
