After researching what BMW provided for its 2000 + model for a tether mount, and finding out that such available and special order components will still require notching and drilling thru the sheetmetal as well as the package shelf on my '98 E39, I devised a $4.00 tether mount apparatus that can be bolted onto the E39's rear shelf without the need to remove the rear shelf or drilling thru sheetmetal.

The following shots below basically sums up what I did to my car in under 15 minutes.

While I recognize that this is a moot point if your car's a 2000 and newer (it's now included), on earlier models where there are no welded nut or prepunched tabs to mount the BMW bracket (selling for $17) what I set out to accomplish was to do so as painlessly and inexpensively as can be while overengineering the components currently available by BMW.

Hope this helps anyone contemplating this new child seat tether strap requirement.
