You need to get an expert in "loss of value" based upon the damage that was done to your son's car. Possibly your repair shop can help you locate such a person.
A similar thing happened to me in my "new" BMW about 7 years ago. Repair was about $5500 to get the car looking good as new and loss of value about $5000.
I was able to collect this, but had to file a lawsuit against the other insurance company with the threat of a second seperate lawsuit for personal injury. They settled the day prior to court date with a provision that I not sue them for personal injury.
