... since the shade is black, I don't really think it offers much heat protection, just light (the light is converted to heat INSIDE the car and doesn't get reflected OUTSIDE).

I used mine in the "up" position for the sides and rear almost all summer long. It's also darn handy at night when the jerk behind you has misaligned lights (or just an SUV which are always in your face).

In terms of reliability, previous posts indicated that it's like most mechanical devices - it may need replacing. For me, the reward is worth the risk and I haven't had any problems so far (5+ months).
