But, I noticed I have a bit of a shimmy at 45 mph.

Spacers were used in the installation (20mm). There lay the elements. Any comments?

How many miles do you have on that car?

The E39 is notorious (in racing circles) for problems with runout in the front hub/wheel bearings, resulting in shimmy. This will be exacerbated by thick spacers such as the 20mm ones you installed.

If the alignment doesn't cure the shimmy, try swapping the wheels around to see if there is an imbalance in a wheel or tire. If that fixes the problem (or changes it) then have the wheels carefully rebalanced and try it again in the original positions.

Assuming the alignment and the wheel rebalancing don't work, then it's time to check the hubs. Measure your hub runout with a dial indicator. If it's greater than 0.04mm (which translates to about 0.09mm at the rotor), consider replacing the hub assemblies.

I suggest doing the hub replacement as a last resort because it's the most difficult and expensive to fix of the three possible causes for shimmy.

Hope this helps.

Dave Z.
