The cost to have the rear power sunshade would cost me less at the time of ordering that an "after the fact installation." I am not sure of the practical value of it, Is it another thing to break/cause electrical problems in the long run?

I ordered my 2000 540i/6 with pretty much every option available, including the sunshades. So far, I've really not used them though I will admit my kids like to play with them. (They like playing with anything that might possibly break if sufficiently mistreated.)

The few times we've had them up, I haven't really liked the way they reduce your visibility through the windows. Let's face it: you have this perforated mesh screen over them and you just don't see the traffic around you as easily with the it up.

So I don't know. I don't regret getting them as the cost wasn't significant on what was already a $50K+ automobile and when they're down, it's no different than not having them. Would I bother to get them again? Hard to say. Maybe I need more summer experience with them. But it's certainly not like the question of folding rear seats, which to me are an absolute no-brain, something I would never do without.
