There was a thread here some months back where a few of us were wondering if our 540i/6s weren't performing as they should. Turns out that if that's all you drive, you stop noticing how incredibly the car corners / handles / etc.

My solution: another car. I got an '01 VW GTI GLX (2.8l VR6, 5-speed, black/black). The GTI is a hoot to drive (power-to-weight ratio just slightly better than a 528), has lots of the amenities we're used to (even rain-sensing wipers!). It makes getting back into the BMW a real treat!
