I recently noticed some oil leakage around my valve covers on my '97 540-6. I checked oil and levels were OK, but it scares me to think that this is happening.

Car is off warranty. What else should I check? Can I replace valve cover gaskets myself, or should I have BMW service $$$$$.

The valve cover gaskets aren't too big a deal to change if that's where the problem is. A more common oil leak area is the front timing chain cover on either head. It's not much fun to do.
