Some people have put in subs in the trunk without any holes or access to interior. They claim it sounds ok but you need to play the sub pretty loud.

I have built a custom sub box with an Infinity Perfect 10. It fits up against the back seat and I cut a hole in the sheet metal where the arm rest opens up. I removed the factory cloth that covers the back seat panel in the trunk so I can cover the hole back up if I sell the car and keep the sub.

The sub box was only 13" wide, 12" deep at the base and 5" deep at the top so I still have floor space on either side of the box.

Good luck!

I have a '99 540ia with the standard sound system. I agree with the comments on the board - it's not too good (that is being kind). The first improvement I would like to make is to add some bass. The standard system is lacking in the 'woofer' department. I have talked to a couple of shops, and they claim that the 5 series trunks are so tight, a sub will have a hard time getting sound into the cabin. I do not have fold down seats, nor ski sack. I would rather not cut into anything. Any suggestions? Also, a reputable installation company in the S Jersey area would be appreciated.
