The stock has 0 air loss.
My MB quarts have a small amount of air loss, which you can feel coming out on the front doors with the panel off. It did not effect the quality of the mid bass (much cleaner bass) then the stock speaker so I did not worry.
The foam I believe is a must because it provides a cushion between the speaker and the panel so that the panel doesn't make any noise from the vibrating speaker.
If you do not want the air loss, or have a larger amount of air loss than I do, you can get some WINDSHIELD WEATHER STRIPPING from a body shop or possibly an auto parts store. Its a clay type of black material which you would work into the underside of the 5.25 before you place it back into the socket.
With my MBQuarts, I places the ring over the 5.25 backwards so that it would sit the speaker nicely into the socket. It worked out very well. Although there is a small amount of air loss, its not major and did not have any effect from what I could tell. I plan to tear the door apart in a week after I get the new MCD 51 (51mm) midrange drivers for the doors, so I will probably find some of that weather stripping and apply it to the 5.25 underside so that it does not have any air loss.
