Gas is Gas but use the Octane speced for car (archive)

Gas is gas. Brand does not matter. It is traded back and forth at all levels of production and distribution by all players. I live in Boston and regularly see Mobil tankers leaving Global terminals.

Per local Boston Globe article, variations in octane level vary the combustion point given a certain pressure. The higher the octane, the higher the compression required. (If I remember the article correctly.) If you use low octane when high octane is specified, premature ignition will occur. So, use what the mfg recomends, no more, no less.
